The Nightwatch

2000 – De tentoonstelling ‘everything needs time . . . ’ was een groepstentoonstelling van geselecteerd werk van acht Nederlandse en Vlaamse kunstenaars, onder curatorschap van Ineke van der Wal in Honiton (St. Micheal’s Church and Thelma Hulbert Gallery) en in Exeter in de Space Gallery. Deelnemende kunstenaars waren: Berlinde de Bruyckere, Peter Buggenhout, Bettie van Haaster, Nico Parlevliet, Maria Roosen, Keiko Sato, Johan Tahon en Fiona Tan.

Lichtheid is het eerste woord dat in je opkomt als je naar de installaties van Nico Parlevliet kijkt. Tentachtige structuren slingeren naar elkaar toe. Ze wekken eigenlijk de indruk van een leger, zeker in ‘The Nightwatch’ dat precies doet wat de titel doet vermoeden. Met een luchtige verwijzing naar Rembrandts schilderij met dezelfde titel, maken deze vierentwintig ‘wezens’ geluid zodra een van hun sensoren wordt gealarmeerd. Licht en ‘levend’ hebben ze een merkwaardige gelijkenis met de onbeweeglijke grafstenen bij de kerk.

2000 – The exhibition ‘everything needs time. . . ‘ was a group exhibition of selected work by eight Dutch and Flemish artists, curated by Ineke van der Wal in Honiton (St. Michael’s Church and Thelma Hulbert Gallery) and in Exeter in the Space Gallery. Participating artists were: Berlinde de Bruyckere, Peter Buggenhout, Bettie van Haaster, Nico Parlevliet, Maria Roosen, Keiko Sato, Johan Tahon and Fiona Tan.

Lightnessfinally is the first word that might come to mind when one looks at Nico Parlevliet’s installations. Tentlike structures hurl towards each other. They actually give the impression of an army, especially in ‘The Nightwatch’ that does exactly what its title inclines. At a light-hearted reference to Rembrandt’s painting of the same title, these twenty-four ‘creatures’ make sound as soon as one of their sensors is alarmed. Light and ‘alive’ they have a curious resemblance to the standing gravestones near the church.
