Crying Carpet

Deelnemende kunstenaars: Christiaan Bastiaans(NL), Berlinde de Bruyckere (Be), Johannes Deimling(D), Birgit Dieker(D), Tracey Emin(GB), Maria Hahnenkamp(A), Petter Hellsing(S), Michael Kiezer(A), Ulrike Lienbacher(A), Andrea Milde (Sp), Lucy Orta(F/GB), Anne van de Pals(NL), Nico Parlevliet(NL), Andrea Pesendorfer(A), Monika Pichler(A), Silke Radenhausen(D), John K. 2004 – On the ground lies a Hamadan (Persian) carpet from which 10 flutes protrude, as if the carpet, like a bull in the arena, has to be rung up to action. From the edge of the rug come 10 tubes with the same number of air mattress pumps. In Crying Carpet the audience is directly involved because it makes the work work with its own movement. In other words: the work of art responds to the action of the viewer, creating communication between the viewer and the work and between the spectators themselves; because the work of art only really reveals its secret when all the foot pumps are operated.
Crying Carpet is part of ‘Flexible / Identities’, a traveling exhibition. Starting at the TextielMuseum Tilburg, it then goes to The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, Kunsthallen Brandt Klaedeflabrik in Odense and finally the Landesgalerie am Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseum in Linz.
